Computer Design Career
by Dawn Papandrea
Do you stop to admire Flash-enhanced Web sites, game animation, or even cool product packaging, and wonder how's they do that? If so, you've got an eye for things created by a computer designer. The good news is you, too, can combine your curiousity, creativity and computer skills for a lucrative computer design career. In fact, among the five design occupations, as defined by the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), computer designers are expected to have the most new jobs through 2014.
But make no mistake - keen competition exists for jobs in computer design because of its techie cool appeal, salary potential, and work-from-home freelance opportunities. That's why formal education is very helpful in setting you apart from the competition when seeking a computer design job.

Beyond an eye for detail and a love of graphic design computer programs, you should look into school options for computer design if you're serious about entering the field. Many professionals begin with an associate degree or certificate program from a professional school, which focuses on the technical aspects of the field. You can also work toward a bachelor's degree in fine arts or computer design. Typical coursework includes studio art, principles of design, computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques, and Web site design.

As you can imagine, with the interactive explosion of all things Internet and multimedia, part of your job as a computer designer will most likely include using a variety of graphics, layout and Web design computer software, as well as some animation. As such, you'll be expected to stay up to date through continuing education on the latest technology and software in order to flourish in the computer design field.

Whether your interest is in Web-based business, entertainment industries, or top-notch technology, computer designers will be in demand. Those with Web and animation skills and knowledge will have an edge.

The appeal of a computer design career is enhanced by the option of working on solo projects to supplement a regular income, or even freelancing full-time. Solo designers, who freelanced or worked under contract to another company, reported median earnings of $60,000, according to the OOH.
